Roadhouse Radio NOW: 03/28/12: Charlie Parr & Justin Townes Earle Both Play The Joint!

KEXP photo by Chad Syme

This show is loaded for bear and delivers on our promise of "keeping it real", man.

Charlie Parr (pictured above) may be easily mistaken for a house painter, a shaman, or a roots evangelist (it's true he may be all three, but I didn't ask him about painting or anything carpentry related) but he's one skilled guitarist and singer of traditional music, and one helluva nice guy. He's from Minnesota, so no big surprise, right?

Charlie Parr performed in-studio for me on this show and you'll hear 5 songs, mostly from his new LP Keep Your Hand On The Plow (a collection of gospel songs), and an interview where he talks about the deep treasure trove of trad music, his fav guitar players, and hoping to have breakfast with his Mom in Austin, MN. nexth month on his way back home from touring. He's a real treat.

Charlie Parr plays traditional music the way it's supposed to be played: committed and fully immersed. He does two songs with the above, pictured National resonator guitar, two with a banjo, and my favorite new song by him, "First Upon This Country" with a regular acoustic. Charlie blew me away last year at Pickathon, and I was eagerly awaiting his visit to The Roadhouse. Check out the whole thing in the second hour of this show (link below) - OR - go to the KEXP Live Performance page and listen to the session immediately.

And as for that "loaded for bear" claim, you'll also hear Justin Townes Earle on this show in the first hour. Now he wasn't in The Roadhouse (this time), but rather I played his entire 30 min SXSW performance as captuted by KEXP. Most songs are from his new LP Nothing Gonna Change The Way You Feel About Me Now.

It’s time to fully take notice of Justin Townes Earle. Perhaps more talented than his famous father Steve (no, really) and possibly as good a songwriter as his name sake, Townes Van Zant, Justin has just released another album of seemingly effortless songs that I consider instant roots classics drawing on folk, country and the American tradition. His arranging is perfect.

Add the fact that he is super cool, has style, taste, and has embraced his new home of NYC is an added bonus that makes Justin Townes Earle a real favorite here in The Roadhouse …. and I may just “stand on Bob Dylan’s coffee-table in my cowboy boots” and saddle him with the whole “spokesman for a generation” thing. OK, I won't. But I do look to him for what's exactly right about the new crop of indie-rootsy songwriters who know what's ahead, and sometimes more importantly, what's behind them. Justin's got it. Please check him out.

There's tons of other new music on this show too: Mike & Ruthy, Lee Fields & The Expressions (oh shit!) Satellite 4 ("Johnny Horn, Johnny Horn") Luke Roberts, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Andre Williams & The Sadies, Todd Snider, and the world radio debut of the new Hurrah For The Riff Raff, a New Orleans indie-folk band featuring a 21 year-old native Bronx Peurto Rican, Alynda Seagarra, who after hoping trains around the country for awhile, settled in the Crescent City and discoverd Gram Parsons and Neil Young. The results are great! You'll be hearing from this record all Spring.

More next week! Click the link!
