The Kings of Northern Soul! EMERALD CITY SOUL CLUB is tonight in Seattle
Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 10:35AM
The third jive-time in four nights! Vintage SOUL DJs are bringing the wax to you in Seattle!
The first week of every month belongs to the local soul collectors and their parties of get-down people who readily enjoy getting down with the get-down. The spot for ECSC and DUG is Lo-Fi on Eastlake.
The crowd is decidedly hipster - whether you are hipster, or were a hipster, or so beyond that you hate a hipster cuz these hipsters ain't like hipsters the way you knew hipsters (I feel ya...) but the demo mix and vibe is super healthy (tho last year some dude at ECSC dressed as Sgt. Pepper and got beat up, and after lengthy blog speculation, it was determined Sgt. Pepper was drunk and being as ass-hole). Of course the records are killer and the treasure trove of old soul seems bottom-less; even for those of us who have records. It's like, "how can there be so many jams recorded back then that I don't know, on top of the ones I do know, on top of all the 1960s & 70s solid radio hits?" I don't know. The studios, producers, and session men musta been recording over-time and makin' somethin' good every day. One can only wonder.
There is no wonder, however, why these nights go off and why people dance their asses off to music nearly 50 years old. The DJs got cuts. So here's to Nipper, Greasy, Scotty G (Self-Administered Beatdown) Gell, D James, Science, and Mac - the men of the floor-filling, funk trackin' goodness. Every month.
Oh ya, I'll be in filling in for Scotty G for the June SOUL HOLE, Wed 6/2. Be there. Happy Hour drinks and food!
The Breakdown:
- SOUL HOLE - first Wednesdays @ Triple Door bar (Musicaquarium)
- DUG - first Fridays @ Lo Fi
- EMERALD CITY SOUL CLUB - first Saturdays @ Lo Fi
